After 3 years as Fluid Movement’s Artistic Director, Val is stepping down, and Ashley is stepping up.
Ashley started with Fluid Movement in 2017’s LOVE Lights at Light City. Soon after she took on leading stage and swimming roles in Druid Hill Haunt, Sharkespeare, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents: The Water Ballet. In addition to performing in and directing small gigs (like Honfest and Trash Dance) and co-directing a scene in Fluid Movement: The Water Ballet, Ashley took charge of programming for the Fluid Movement Gala in 2019. When the pandemic shut down public performances and isolated us inside our homes, Ashley organized and ran weekly virtual Dance Calls, bringing in and mentoring new choreographers, suggesting themes, and managing the social media and promotion for the events. The Dance Calls were a lifeline for our community, and participants cherished these moments of fun and community. Ashley continued to produce the series when it moved outside into the parks, dealing with all the challenges that the transition to live events entailed. Since then Ashley has been a leader in Fluid Movement’s creative work, and the planning and programming that goes into it, including producing Fluid Movement’s Yacht Rocket, a triumphant return to our water ballet roots. Her newsletters, website redesign, and constant behind the scenes labor (so many emails!) have been invaluable to Fluid Movement and our mission as we continue to navigate a strange new pandemic world.
Ashley has the personal investment, skills, smarts, and deep love for this community that Fluid Movement needs and deserves in an Artistic Director. The Fluid Movement Board of Directors, Outgoing Artistic Director Valarie Perez-Schere, and Community Events Coordinator Claire Molina are delighted to announce this exciting news, and look forward to continuing to support and empower Ashley as she takes on her new title.
Val is a founder of Fluid Movement and is stepping down after 23 years. She will continue to be involved with Fluid Movement as a performer, maker, and mentor. She holds Fluid Movement very close to her heart, and feels so deeply grateful for Ashley’s talent and commitment. She knows Fluid Movement remains in extremely capable hands.
